Lafayette Parish Arrest Record Laws
Louisiana's Public Records Act at LRS 44:1 gives any adult the right to inspect and copy public records from government agencies. The LPSO must follow this law. You can request records in person, by mail, or by email. If a request is denied, the agency must give a written reason, and you have the right to challenge that decision in district court.
LRS 44:3 specifically covers arrest records. It says initial arrest reports, booking records, summons, citations, and bills of information are public. These are open from the moment they are created. They stay public even if the case was dropped or never went to trial. The booking record does not require a conviction to be accessible.
The full Louisiana Criminal History database, or LACCH, is restricted under LRS 15:587 and is not open for general public use. What is available to the public is the local booking and arrest record held by the sheriff, not the statewide compiled history. If you need your own full criminal history from the state, you can request it through the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information for a fee of around $46.
